Central Middle School is committed to a positive climate based on mutual respect. Using an approach known as Restitution, we encourage students to reflect on their needs and the needs of others, not merely to comply with school rules, but to go further . . . to demonstrate respect for oneself, others, and the environment because it’s “the right thing to do”. Moreover, we are weaving the concepts of Restitution into how we address inappropriate behaviour, providing students with opportunities and encouragement to take ownership for their actions, fix their mistakes, and resolve issues in a positive manner. Of course, there is a bottom line, and we are committed to a safe environment, free from discrimination, harassment, drugs and violence.
During class time, we encourage students to participate in learning activities in a manner that enhances, rather than disrupts, the learning of others. As a place of learning, we expect students to dress in a manner appropriate for school (as opposed to the beach). This means that mid-driffs as well as underwear and straps should not be visible. Also, short skirts and strapless or ‘shoestring’ tops should not be worn at school, and hats, hoodies, and bandanas should not be worn inside. Finally, any clothing, jewelry, or other items that advertise or promote alcohol, drugs, sex, violence, or intolerance are simply not acceptable at school.
Personal electronic devices – ipods, cell phones, gameboys, etc. – are distracting and we request that they not be brought to school. If a parent desires his/her child to have a cell phone for before or after school contact, it should remain in the student’s locker throughout the school day, as should any other personal electronic devices students bring to school. Note that students who are noncompliant with this expectation may find their device confiscated for parental pick-up.
Beyond the basic expectations discussed above, Central provides students with a myriad of great ways to have fun and further develop social responsibility. Through participation in regular classroom activities as well as numerous special events, fieldtrips, clubs, teams, and programs, students have the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of cooperative endeavours, contributing to the school and community-at-large.
All of these expectations and opportunities help Central Middle School to be a safe, purposeful, and positive place of learning.
